IBM eServer iSeries
The IBM eServer allows businesses and other
organizations to accelerate into the next generation of e-business. As an
integral part of the IBM eServer brand, the iSeries delivers e-business value
via intelligent integration, innovation, and application flexibility. The IBM
eServer iSeries includes the recently announced Models 820, 830 840, Model 270,
Models SB2, SB3, and the Dedicated Servers for Domino.
Intelligent Integration
The iSeries combines leading edge technology
with a flexible, innovative operating environment, developed for the AS/400 and
extended to the iSeries line of e-business servers. The "i" in
iSeries stands for intelligent integration, and features open systems functions
which are built-in to the operating system and pretested for reliable, turnkey
function. These integrated functions include the web servers (IBM HTTP server
and the Apache server), the Web Application server (WebSphere Standard
Edition), the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), database (IBM DB2 Universal DataBase
for AS/400), Communications (TCP/IP), OS/400 PASE, e-business security and
Linux in the future. The iSeries intelligent integration allows businesses to
deploy solutions faster, more reliably, and with a low cost of ownership while
implementing a wide range of e-business applications based on industry
standards, with superior performance.
Innovation
The iSeries is based on IBM's leading edge
microprocessor technology, which includes two industry breakthroughs: copper
and Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI). IBM has replaced the aluminum connections
between transistors with copper, resulting in denser packages, lower power
consumption and higher performance. SOI is a revolutionary method to prevent
electrical leakage from the chips, and together with copper, accounts for
between 20 and 35% in processor performance improvements. The iSeries also
boasts the new IBM memory switching technology, with switch speeds of 36GB per
second. High Speed Links (HSL) allow data transfer at rates of up to 1GB per
second. With copper, SOI, memory switching, and HSL the iSeries is in the
forefront of technological innovation in the industry today. The iSeries has
demonstrated it's scalability with these innovative technologies by delivering
152,346 transactions per minute (tpmC) on the TPC-C benchmark. iSeries also
demonstrated superb collaborative performance, supporting 75,000 concurrent
NotesBench Domino R5 Mail Users with an average response time of 276
milliseconds, and exceptional Java scalability by exceeding 80,000 operations
per second with the industry-standard SPECjbb2000 benchmark. The iSeries
intelligent integration of this technology allows businesses to benefit from
enterprise class computing without an "enterprise size" IT support
staff.
Application Flexibility
The iSeries offers a wide range of application
choices to businesses of all sizes and in any industry, allowing an
unprecedented level of flexibility and independence. The iSeries architecture
features a flexible operating environment that runs any combination of AS/400,
ported UNIX applications, Linux (in the future), Windows, Domino, or Java
applications concurrently. Combined with the iSeries inherent workload
management capabilities, Logical Partitioning (LPAR) and the integration of IBM
eServer xSeries, the iSeries enables businesses to run several diverse
application environments on one physical machine. Businesses can now choose
whether to grow their server farm, maintain their server farm, or consolidate
server footprints on the iSeries for simplified management, increased
availability, and lower total cost of ownership. The iSeries embraces standards-based
computing with a full range of application choices while offering independence
from proprietary solutions.
The iSeries also offers businesses the freedom
to grow without disruption through the new Capacity Upgrade on Demand features
of the Model 840. These features enable a customer to activate immediate
incremental processing power non-disruptively, when it is needed, and pay for
it only when initiated.
The iSeries is perfect for growing companies
looking to do business-critical B2B, ERP, supply chain management and CRM
applications. The new iSeries is an ideal e-business server for those companies
who prefer fast deployment of integrated e-business solutions rather than
"do it yourself" or "contracted services" systems integration.
The iSeries 400 delivers the intelligent integration, innovation, and
flexibility that businesses need to accelerate successfully into the new
e-business economy.
iSeries Models SB2 and SB3
The Models SB2 and SB3 are tuned to deliver
processing power focused on dedicated CPU-intensive serving for the middle-tier
of a multitier environment. DASD space is limited (in relation to database
servers or other multipurpose servers offered by IBM) to minimize the overuse
of CPU cycles for tasks unrelated to "pure" application serving. When
a single iSeries middle-tier server is not enough, employ multiple SB2 and SB3
models to push an iSeries back end database server to its full potential.
Internal Battery Backup/Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS)
The Models SB2 and SB3 include an internal
battery that is automatically activated in the event of utility power loss. The
battery provides full operating power for a short time to all components within
the system unit, but not to any external components. This can allow the system to
run uninterrupted if utility power is lost for a short time (less than 30
seconds). For longer power outages, the system will use the battery to attempt
an orderly shutdown to avoid losing data in main storage that has not been
written to disk. You benefit from faster recovery when the system is restarted
after utility power returns. An external UPS is recommended to protect the
system unit and any external components against longer utility power outages. A
UPS can allow the system to run uninterrupted for longer than 30 seconds when
power is lost, and can maintain power long enough to ensure that the system
successfully completes a shutdown to avoid losing data.

Processor CPW (1) (1)
Note: (1) Processor CPW values are not valid representations of performance
characteristics for iSeries middle-tier servers due to the limited amount of
disk attachability. Disk space is not a high priority for middle-tier servers
performing CPU-intensive work because they are always connected to another
computer acting as the "database" server in a multi-tier
implementation.
Performance information related to the
capabilities of iSeries middle-tier servers can be found in the AS/400
Performance Capabilities Reference at the following URL:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/online/chgfrm.htm
Software vendor specific sizing information
should be evaluated when considering the use of an iSeries middle-tier server.
Competency centers and/or vendor Web sites can provide general guidance related
to the appropriate use of middle-tier (aka. application) servers for various
customer scenarios.
For example, performance measurements for an
iSeries middle-tier server when used to support the "application server"
level of an SAP R/3 implementation can be obtained through the IBM/SAP
International Center-of-Competence in Walldorf, Germany, at the following Web
page:
http://www.ibm.com/erp/sap
Additional performance data related to SAP
defined benchmarks that demonstrate iSeries server scalability in a multi-tier
environment can also be obtained through IBM/SAP competence centers and/or
SAP's Web page at the following:

Features can be added and removed from AS/400
models by ordering new features, removing existing features, or doing feature
conversions, if available.
Feature conversions are used when it is
necessary to physically change an installed feature. New parts will be shipped,
and the removed or replaced parts become the property of IBM.
The addition of a new feature and removal
of an installed feature does not involve any credit. Unless otherwise
specified, a removed feature remains the property of the customer. Feature
removals not associated with a model upgrade or feature conversion may be
subject to a charge.
Processor features for the iSeries SB2 and SB3
servers are IBM installable. iSeries server to iSeries server interchange of
processor features is AS/400 system password protected. iSeries server to
iSeries server interchange of processor features outside IBM standard practices
and procedures may void SB2 and SB3 server warranty and/or service contracts.
System Configuration
All system units have locations for features
including processors, main storage, power, expansion, disks, tapes, CD-ROM, and
IOPs. Some restrictions may apply to certain combinations of features. The
configurator contains the rules and performance considerations for placement of
these features, and should be used to ensure a valid configuration. The use of
performance tools may also help in optimizing a configuration to match a
specific set of requirements.
Customer Setup (CSU) Features
Some features are designated CSU. On MES
orders where all features are CSU, the customer installs all features. IBM
installation is available for a charge, under normal service contracts. On MES

Key: M - Available on field upgrade (MES) orders only
S - Support only -- cannot be ordered
When a mix of data protection schemes is
required, a disk protection specify code should not be used.
Causes the order to fail if sufficient disk
units are not ordered to support device-level mirrored protection. On
upgrade orders, a warning message will be generated during installation of the
upgrade if sufficient disk units are not available. #0040 requires all disk
units to be placed into mirrored pairs. The load source must be controlled by
the first disk controller and must be mirrored to a like disk unit also
attached to the first disk controller. The minimum number of disks allowed on a
system is two.
Causes the order to fail if a non-RAID
configuration is ordered. This is the default specify code for data protection.
#0041 requires that all internal disk units be placed into RAID arrays using
#9748. The rules for RAID can be found in the description for #9748. The
minimum number CMS of RAID disk units allowed on a system is four. All external
disk units must be RAID capable.
A system console specify code must be selected
on each new order. One console adapter is required on each new order to drive
the system console. The system console may be changed on installed systems via
MES.
When #5540 is on the order, the system console
is driven by a twinaxial adapter. #4746 PCI Twinaxial IOA (Console) is added to
the order:
When #5544 is on the order, the system console
is driven by a WAN adapter. The following adapter and cable are added to the
order:
With #5546, the system console is driven by a
token-ring LAN adapter. #2744, PCI 100Mbps Token-Ring IOA, is required on the
server. This LAN adapter must be dedicated to console support/functions and
cannot be used for any other purpose.
Prerequisite: One #0367 Operations Console
cable. With LPAR, one #0367 per server is sufficient, regardless of the number
of "LAN consoles" defined per system. OS/400 V5R1, or later, is
required.
With #5548, the system console is driven by an
Ethernet LAN adapter. #4838, PCI 100/10Mbps Ethernet IOA, is required on the system.
This LAN adapter must be dedicated to console support functions and cannot be
used for any other purpose.
Prerequisite: One #0367 Operations Console
cable. With LPAR, one #0367 per server is sufficient, regardless of the number
of "LAN consoles" defined per system.
This specify code is added to an order for
each of the following devices directly attaching (not second on a daisy chained
string) to an iSeries system via a #2718 or #2768.
Note: If any of the above devices will be daisy chained off another device,
then the #0162 specify is not be added to the order.
This specify is added to an order for each
device attaching to an iSeries system via a #2765, PCI Fibre Channel Tape
Controller
One of the following specify codes is required
on the system to identify the Alternate IPL (AIPL) device.
The configurator will select default line
cords for the country in which the order is placed. Optional line cords may be
selected.
All systems require a #29XX specify code.
Machine history at the IBM plant is used to
ship the proper language when the 29XX code is not on an MES order.
These features have country-specific usage.
Indicates that preloaded software and/or
consolidated I/O is to be shipped with the initial order. A maximum of one
(#5000) is supported.
(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of July 2,
2002)

SB2 and SB3.
#5029 is required on all new orders for Models
SB2 and SB3.
Required to install this MES. This code drives
translated customer installation instructions, MES package labeling, and
indicates that an IBM CE should not automatically be dispatched to install the
MES. The order configurators will place this specify on orders when required.
Indicates that IBM service involvement is
required to install an MES. This feature drives service installation
instructions, MES package labeling, and indicates that IBM service should be
dispatched to install the MES.
Used by manufacturing applications to
determine the correct number of additional hardware items to include on a bulk
MES order.
Used on initial orders for SB2 and SB3 servers,
this specify code designates that the new server will replace (not upgrade) an
installed AS/400 (RISC) model.
When #0205 is on the order, manufacturing will
only load SLIC and up through QSYS of OS/400. This will facilitate migrating
some of the OS/400 information from the installed system. In addition to the
new server, enough DASD must be ordered to hold all the data from the current
model, as well as the required software on the new server. Specify Code #5000
(SW Preload Required) is mutually exclusive with #0205.
The AS/400 RISC server will replace (not
upgrade) an installed AS/400 RISC model. The migration process requires that
the installed model be at the same version and release level of OS/400 and
other Licensed Programs (LPs) as the new server. Financial considerations of
upgrades to the installed software should be reviewed as part of the migration
planning.
More information, and an updated AS/400 System
Upgrade and Data Migration Road Map (RISC-RISC) is available at:
http://www.ibm.com/eserver/iseries/techstudio/tech_ref/rrmap/

Included in the base of Models SB2 and SB3,
#9748 is an Ultra2 SCSI controller with a 26MB write-cache that provides RAID-5
protection and compression for internal disk units and also supports internal
tape units and CD-ROM units.
#9748 supports both compression and
non-compression modes. The mode of operation is determined by a hardware
jumper. #9748 is shipped in non-compression mode. By moving the hardware
jumper, the controller will function in compression mode.
In addition to providing RAID-5 protection for
disks, #9748 is also designed to work as a high performance controller for
disks protected by system mirroring or disks with no protection. In the RAID-5
configuration, disk unit protection is provided at less cost than mirroring,
and with greater performance than system checksums.
#9748 also supports #4331, 1.6GB Read Cache
Device, which provides increased performance. #4331 is supported only when
#9748 is not in compression mode.
The #9748 controller supports a maximum of
four disk units on the SB2 and eight disk units on the SB3. A minimum of four
disk units of the same capacity are needed for a valid RAID 5 configuration. A maximum
of four arrays are allowed per controller, with a maximum of 10 disk units
allowed per array. All disk units in an array must be of the same capacity.
Parity is spread across four disk units for arrays of four to seven disk units.
Parity can be spread across either four or eight disk units for arrays of eight
to ten disk units. For systems started with eight to ten disk units in an
array, the parity for that array will be spread across 8 disk units. For
systems that are started with fewer than eight disk units in an array and later
field upgraded to eight, nine, or ten disk units, the RAID function must be
stopped and then started before the parity will be spread across eight disk
units.
The #9748 controls up to two removable media
devices (internal tape or CD-ROM).
Prerequisite: Available PCI slot in the base
PCI Node IOP.
